- If you’re staying in Brunnen instead, start with a short walk along the village streets down toward Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) before heading to the lakeside promenade.

- Walking the historic center of Schwyz and exploring the streets and squares is completely free and already gives you a feel for the “cradle of Switzerland.”
- Skip paid museum entries if you’re on a tight budget; you can still appreciate the historic buildings, fountains, and views from the outside.
- Grab a coffee and pastry from a bakery or supermarket near the station or main square instead of sitting down for a full, more expensive breakfast.
Midday — Brunnen lakeside promenade and Swiss Path section
- Make your way to Brunnen on Lake Lucerne (by bus or train if you started in Schwyz) and walk along the lakeside promenade, taking in the sweeping views of the fjord‑like arms of the lake and surrounding mountains.
- Follow part of the “Swiss Path” (Weg der Schweiz) from Brunnen along the shoreline, enjoying quiet sections, viewpoints, and information boards about Swiss history.
- Find a lakeside bench or small park area to sit and have lunch, watching boats and ferries crossing the water.
Budget tips
- The lakeside promenade and Swiss Path are free and offer some of the best scenery in Central Switzerland without any entrance fees.
- Instead of eating at a lakefront restaurant, pick up picnic supplies at Coop/Migros in Schwyz or Brunnen and enjoy lunch outdoors by the water.
- If you want to get on the lake, consider a short regular ferry hop rather than a long, more expensive tourist cruise.
The thing to do here that nobody puts on a list — build your own Swiss Army knife
- Victorinox is from here. The factory is at Ibach, between Schwyz and Brunnen, and it has been making the knife in this valley since 1884. Almost everybody drives past it on the way to Lucerne.
- At the brand store you can assemble a Swiss Army knife yourself — the trays of blades and springs and scales laid out, the press, the rivets, and at the end a knife that is yours because you built it. Ours came out engraved Switzerland 2018.
- It takes under an hour, children can do it with help, and it is the only souvenir anybody in the party still has years later. A shop-bought knife is a shop-bought knife. One you riveted together yourself is not.
- This is the reason to give Brunnen and Schwyz a day rather than a stop. The lake is beautiful and so are forty other Swiss lakes. This is here and nowhere else.
Budget tips
- You pay for the knife and the assembly, and you would have paid for a knife anyway. Judged against the usual souvenir shelf it is good value rather than an extravagance.
- Book ahead in summer. The benches fill and it is not something you want to queue for with tired children.
Afternoon — Viewpoints above the lake or relaxed village time
- In the afternoon, choose an easy viewpoint above the lake or stay low and explore more of Brunnen’s lanes, small churches, and quiet corners.
- If you’re up for more, follow a signposted hiking trail that climbs gently above Brunnen or Schwyz for balcony‑style views over Lake Lucerne and the surrounding landscape.
- Alternatively, spend time in a local café or on a public terrace, simply enjoying the mountain views and watching daily life go by.
Budget tips
- Stick to free hiking and walking trails for your “big” activity; many short paths from Schwyz or Brunnen deliver excellent views at no cost.
- If you already have a day pass or regional ticket, use it for any short local bus/train rides instead of buying extra point‑to‑point tickets.
- Choose just one paid viewpoint or lift (if you decide to use one at all) and focus the rest of your afternoon on free outdoor experiences.
Evening — Dinner and evening stroll by the lake
- Finish your day in Brunnen, having dinner either slightly off the main lakeside strip or at a simple pizzeria/restaurant to keep prices more reasonable.
- After dinner, take a relaxed stroll along the lakeside promenade, watching the evening light fade over the mountains and the lake grow calmer.
- Sit for a while on one of the lakeside benches or small piers to soak in the quiet atmosphere before heading back to your accommodation.

- Make lunch your main meal if you find a good daytime special and opt for a lighter, cheaper dinner (pizza slice, kebab, supermarket salads, or self‑catering).
- Drink tap water (excellent quality in Switzerland) instead of ordering bottled water with your meal to keep your bill lower.
- Let your evening entertainment be a free lakeside stroll and sunset views rather than a paid attraction—Schwyz and Brunnen’s combination of lake and mountains is the star of the show and doesn’t cost anything.
