Morning — Start at Montreux station and explore the lakeside promenade

  • Walk from Montreux train station downhill to the flower‑lined lakeside promenade, taking in the views of Lake Geneva and the Alps as you go.
  • Stroll toward the main lakeside square and market hall area, passing gardens, sculptures, and the famous Freddie Mercury statue on the waterfront.
  • Continue along the promenade at a relaxed pace, stopping at benches and small piers for photos and to enjoy the “Swiss Riviera” atmosphere.

Budget tips

  • Walking from the station and along the lakeside promenade is completely free and gives you Montreux’s best scenery without paying for any attraction.
  • Browse souvenir stands and shops without feeling pressured to buy—window‑shopping and people‑watching are part of the experience.
  • Skip a sit‑down breakfast and grab a coffee and pastry from a bakery or supermarket near the station or just off the main strip instead of a lakefront café.

Midday — Promenade to Château de Chillon

  • Follow the lakeside path on foot (or take a short local bus) from central Montreux toward Château de Chillon, one of Switzerland’s most famous medieval castles.
  • Enjoy the changing views along the way: vineyards on the slopes, the lake on your right, and the castle slowly coming into view on a small rocky outcrop.
  • Visit the castle interior if you’re interested in history and architecture, or simply admire it from the outside and from the nearby lakeshore.

Budget tips

  • The walk from Montreux to Chillon along the lake is free and takes you past some of the most iconic views in the region.
  • If you want to save on entrance fees, you can enjoy the castle from the outside, take photos from the promenade, and skip the full interior visit.
  • For lunch, buy picnic supplies at Coop/Migros in Montreux and eat by the lake or near the castle instead of eating at a lakeside restaurant.

Afternoon — Old Town of Montreux and vineyard views

  • Head back to Montreux and climb (or bus) up to the Old Town (Vieille‑Ville), with its cobbled streets, older houses, and quieter atmosphere above the lake.
  • Walk to the area around the St‑Vincent church for sweeping views over Montreux, Lake Geneva, and the surrounding hillsides.
  • If you have extra time and energy, follow part of the path toward the Chauderon Gorge or take a short local train up to nearby hillside villages for vineyard and lake panoramas.

Budget tips

  • Exploring the Old Town and enjoying the viewpoints is free; you only pay for transport if you choose to ride a bus or local train instead of walking.
  • If you already bought a regional or day pass, make the most of it by using it for any short trips up to nearby villages rather than paying separate fares.
  • Choose just one paid attraction for the day (for example, Chillon Castle), and keep the rest of your afternoon focused on free walks, views, and photo stops.

Evening — Dinner and sunset along Lake Geneva

  • Return to the lakeside promenade in Montreux for dinner, choosing a spot slightly back from the water or a simpler bistro to keep prices more reasonable.
  • Time your meal or post‑dinner stroll for sunset, when the light on the lake and mountains is at its best and the promenade feels especially atmospheric.
  • Finish the day with a relaxed walk past the Freddie Mercury statue and the gardens, watching the lights come on along the shore.

Budget tips

  • Make lunch your main meal if you can find a good “Mittagsmenü” or set menu, and opt for a lighter, cheaper dinner (takeout, kebab, pizza slice, or supermarket salads).
  • Drink tap water (excellent quality in Switzerland) instead of bottled water in restaurants to cut your bill without sacrificing anything on taste or safety.
  • Let your evening activity be a free lakeside stroll and sunset viewing rather than a paid show or attraction—Montreux’s natural setting is the real star and doesn’t cost a thing.

Would we plan this exact day for you?

Almost certainly not. The day above assumes you are happy on your feet for most of it, that you have the whole day, that you are comfortable working out Swiss trains and buses as you go, and that nobody with you is managing a pushchair, a bad knee, or a six-year-old at four in the afternoon. Change any one of those and the order changes, the pace changes, and sometimes the valley changes.
